Fort Carson is Colorado’s largest military installation and home to several premier fighting units which include the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 4th Infantry Division, the 43rd Area Support Group, the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), and the headquarters of the 7th Infantry Division (Light) an Active Component/Reserve Component division whose combat units are Army National Guard enhanced Separate Infantry Brigades located in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Oregon. Fort Carson’s nearly 140,000 acres south of Colorado Springs, and the Fort’s 236,756 acre Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site in southern Colorado provide almost unparalleled training venues for the Fort’s (and other) fighting units’ readiness development. A recently enhanced railhead complex and proximity to the runways of Peterson AFB/Colorado Springs Airport enable the Fort’s units to deploy anywhere in the world on short notice in support of national security objectives.

Located six miles south of downtown Colorado Springs, the post was named in honor of frontier scout and Army Brigadier General Christopher “Kit” Carson. (Find out more on the history of Fort Carson) The post’s training areas, particularly Pinon Canyon, make it the only place outside of the Army’s National Training Center where brigade-size units can maneuver and train as they intend to fight. Fort Carson’s size, its significant military and civilian workforce, and large dependent population make it the area’s single largest military contributor to the local economy.
